Larne Visitors Guide

Exhibition galleries

The port of Larne is the principle gateway into Northern Ireland and the strong maritime links of this east Antrim coastal community are revealed through a variety of exhibits relating to the first roll-on, roll- off ferries, the Royal Navy and the Princess Victoria disaster.  It’s rural hinterland, which includes two of the nine glens of Antrim, is well represented in the museum’s folk life display.  The history of the Home Rule Crisis, Gun Running and the First and Second World War are revealed by a wealth of objects in the ‘War and Conflict’ section of the Museum.  Visitors can access personal accounts and memories through oral history listening posts and can browse through photographs in a digital community archive.

The Museum also features a dedicated gallery for temporary exhibitions, with a changing programme throughout the year.

The Museum is situated in the heart of the busy shopping town of Larne.  A good selection of cafes are situated nearby.  Staff will be happy to direct you.

Larne Museum

Larne Museum forms part of the newly opened Carnegie Centre, a cultural facility that also includes a temporary gallery, auditorium and education centre.  The development of the Carnegie Centre has given a new lease of life to a former Carnegie Library which originally opened its doors to the public in 1906.  This historic building has been beautifully restored and renovated, with many of its original features remaining intact.

Through modern and attractive new displays, the Museum reflects the distinctive history and heritage of Larne and district.

This lively community museum is very much at the centre of cultural life in the Borough of Larne.
